FinePrint / Resources / Startup legal checklist

Gather the records for your next legal task

Start with the work you need done and its deadline. Gather the documents that show where the company stands today. Mark what is missing and what is undecided. This checklist gets a task ready. It does not decide your company’s legal duties.

A man seen from behind sorts long rows of document stacks on a table under a brass desk lamp in a dim archive.

The checklist

0 of 12

  1. 1 Write down the task and the deadline
  2. 2 Gather the company formation records
  3. 3 Gather the stock and funding records
  4. 4 Check the agreements behind product ownership
  5. 5 Collect the customer agreement and changes
  6. 6 Gather vendor terms and renewal dates
  7. 7 Prepare the facts for the next hire
  8. 8 Describe how the product uses data
  9. 9 Gather records for the funding task
  10. 10 Name who gives each approval
  11. 11 Check who can see the records
  12. 12 Turn the checklist into a task request
  1. 1 Write down the task and the deadline

Name the document, question or company action you need. Add the company, the places involved, and the date you need an answer. Keep your own deadline apart from any deadline a contract or official notice already set.

  2. 2 Gather the company formation records

Find the current company formation documents, registration details, governing documents, and earlier company decisions. Mark which versions are signed or final. Ask who owns the record and whether anything has changed since it was prepared.

  3. 3 Gather the stock and funding records

Collect stock records, founder agreements, equity plans, grant documents, and prior funding agreements relevant to the task. Flag figures that do not agree. Ask the reviewer which approvals or other records the proposed work requires.

  4. 4 Check the agreements behind product ownership

Find founder, employee, contractor, and licensing agreements for the work involved. List any work created before those agreements existed. Ask which documents establish the rights your company owns or uses. Do not infer the answer from an invoice alone.

  5. 5 Collect the customer agreement and changes

Find the signed agreement, amendments, renewal notices, and approved exceptions. Keep the current version clear. If the question concerns a promise in email or a meeting, preserve the relevant context for the reviewer.

  6. 6 Gather vendor terms and renewal dates

Find the signed terms, service description, data agreement, and any changes. Note renewal or notice dates stated in the agreement. Ask who is authorized to approve a change before a team member agrees to one in a reply.

  7. 7 Prepare the facts for the next hire

Write down the role, work location, worker type, pay, proposed equity, and intended start date. Add relevant company policies and earlier approvals. Ask which documents and review the specific hire needs.

  8. 8 Describe how the product uses data

Gather the current privacy notice, data agreements, and accurate product facts. List the data used and the companies involved where relevant. Ask which facts need confirmation before a customer answer or new document is prepared.

  9. 9 Gather records for the funding task

Find the proposed funding terms, earlier funding documents, company decisions, and relevant stock records. List the questions investors have asked. Mark information that is incomplete so it is addressed before being presented as final.

  10. 10 Name who gives each approval

For the task on your desk, identify business owners and the lawyer involved. Ask who is allowed to approve exceptions. A plan should state what needs a decision before the work continues.

A finished draft cannot supply a decision nobody made.

  1. 11 Check who can see the records

Decide which team members and advisers need access to the task. Review access when the work closes or someone’s role changes. Ask how to export the record and what the service terms say about deletion and backups.

  2. 12 Turn the checklist into a task request

Describe the work, facts available, facts missing, locations, decision owners, and deadline. Ask for a plan and cost before work begins. Do not upload confidential records through an open contact form.

Legal AI Counsel

What FinePrint Counsel shows before you approve

Counsel lists the documents it will prepare and the facts it needs. It shows what the task will cost before it starts, and you decide. It works from your company record. Legal work follows a process lawyers approved and sample-check. Work that needs additional legal judgment waits for a lawyer’s review.

The Legal Room

Keep the next task tied to the same record

The Legal Room holds your company documents and decisions. The next task starts from what was already agreed. Your team controls who can open the record and can export it when needed.

Questions

Does this checklist cover everything our company must do?

No. Your legal duties depend on the company, where it is, who is in it, and what it does. Use the checklist to get the records and questions ready for one task’s review.

Should we wait until every document is collected?

No. Tell Counsel which records you have and which are missing. The plan names the facts it needs. Work that depends on a missing fact waits for that answer.
